The Future of American-Made?

Since ARTIFACT's inception in 2010, we've seen interest in American manufacturing wax and wane. In our early years, buzz emerged—fueled by the Great Recession — when a small segment of America paused to reconsider the disposable goods they were buying and made the effort to seek out small American makers in pursuit of better-quality products.

Bootstrapped makers (like ARTIFACT) answered the call of nostalgia in droves. With this movement came a definable aesthetic that burned hot for a few years before fading. By the time handcrafted, American-made toothpicks were being marketed for $30 and Heinz was labeling its ketchup as "artisanal," people were ready to move on.

Most of my American-made business peers from circa 2010 have thrown in the towel, with attrition over last three years being especially brutal. Rising labor and material costs have widened the price gap between domestic and imported goods even further. But I don’t want to be all gloom and doom. Lately, I’ve noticed a fresh wave of small-batch American makers — particularly in the outdoor space — creating innovative ultralight gear you won't find at REI or Cabela's (see Garage Grown Gear).

Innovation is what I love most about domestic manufacturing: the ability to take a concept from ideation to prototype to market in days. This routinely happens at ARTIFACT. Just last week, we were perusing piles of up-cycled materials in our studio for release of our spring collection in a few weeks. When using a foreign manufacturing partner, you are looking at months of lead time, order minimums, and inevitable telephone game, which forces you to play a more cautious (less fun and creative) hand. 

In-house manufacturing capability can be a valuable asset for companies of any size, but it requires a type of labor that has been pushed out of America's DNA since the 1990's - to the point that our ARTIFACT studio looks like a living history museum to younger generations.

I'm rooting for the 1,4000+ makers listed in Crafted With Pride to keep the tradition of American manufacturing alive! 

Tags & Threads Press put a lot work into their revised edition of Crafted With Pride: Made in USA Directory. I was amazed over 1,400 American makers were included, making this the go-to reference for those interested in American-made. It's fun to see my long-time heroes like Danner Boots, Geier Glove Co., and Dehen Knitting Co., as well as countless new discoveries to check out.
