Material Parables: The First ARTIFACT Product
Every business has a beginning. ARTIFACT started with a functional need for a reusable lunch carrier, and I designed what became our No.215 Lunch Tote from waxed canvas and leather, and inadvertently created a new home goods sub-category in the process! The design was praised by The New York Times, then copied by Target (among others). This humble bag enabled me launch a brand that has evolved for over 15 years now. Pinch me!
We're doing a video series we call Material Parables, where objects are shared that have utility, character, and a story to tell. This week, I chose my personal lunch tote. It's the very first object to bear the ARTIFACT mark, and I had no idea I would be making thousands more with vintage sewing equipment I found and restored.
Watch the video to hear the full story that led to a full-fledged studio and a philosophy of thoughtful, lasting design.
