A Crossbody Project Bag Designed Around Making

The No.503 Crossbody Project Bag is a hands-free knitting and crochet project bag designed and handmade in our Omaha, Nebraska studio. Built from 14 oz waxed canvas, Horween vegetable-tanned leather, and solid brass hardware, it combines the organization of a dedicated project bag with the portability and secure closure of an everyday crossbody bag.

Most knitting and crochet project bags are designed to sit beside you. The No.503 is designed to go with you.

Stitched equestrian-style leather handles make it easy to pick up and carry by hand, while the adjustable leather shoulder strap allows the bag to be worn crossbody when you want your hands free. A full-width metal YKK zipper securely closes the main compartment, helping keep yarn, works in progress, and tools contained while traveling, commuting, or heading to knit night.

The zippered placket is designed to fold completely down and lie flat against the outside of the bag when open. This moves the zipper out of the way and creates a wide, unobstructed opening to the main compartment—particularly useful when you're working directly from the bag and don't want yarn or your project continually passing over the zipper.

Once you arrive, the No.503 opens into a roomy, organized workspace for your project.

Five Pockets for Project Organization

Two spacious exterior pockets provide quick access to the things you reach for most often without having to open the main compartment.

Inside, a durable nylon lining and three additional pockets help separate tools and accessories from your yarn and work in progress. The largest interior pocket closes with a snap and is generously sized for printed patterns, notebooks, an iPad, or laptops up to approximately 14 inches.

That gives the No.503 five pockets in total while leaving the main compartment open for yarn and your active knitting or crochet project.

Materials That Get Better With Use

We build the No.503 from materials selected for durability, but also for how they age.

The shell is made from substantial 14 oz waxed canvas. Waxed canvas develops creases, burnishing, and variations in tone as it is handled and carried. Rather than trying to remain pristine, the material records use and develops its own character over time.

The bottom is made from Dublin vegetable-tanned leather from Horween Leather Company in Chicago—one of the finest leathers we've worked with. Dublin has a rich, natural character that develops additional depth and patina with wear.

Handles and shoulder straps are cut from substantial leather selected to complement each canvas colorway. Slate / Burgundy bags use latigo leather, while Field Khaki / Brown bags use full-grain strap leather.

Solid Brass, Not Brass-Plated Hardware

The hardware and rivets on the No.503 are raw solid brass.

That distinction matters. Much of the brass-colored hardware used on bags is plated base metal. As plated hardware wears, the surface finish can eventually flake or wear through, exposing the base metal underneath.

Solid brass behaves differently. There is no decorative brass-colored surface to wear through because the hardware itself is brass. With handling and exposure, the raw brass gradually develops a deeper, rich golden patina.

We like that. A project bag should show evidence of the places it has been and the things you've made while carrying it.

Made in Omaha

The No.503 Crossbody Project Bag is cut, sewn, and assembled in small batches in our Omaha, Nebraska studio.

ARTIFACT has been making durable sewn goods in Omaha since 2010. We approach a knitting or crochet project bag with the same standards we apply to our work and utility bags: substantial materials, purposeful organization, repairable construction, and components selected for years of use rather than a single season.

The result is a project bag made to carry more than yarn. It's an everyday crossbody for the tools, materials, patterns, and works in progress that are part of making something by hand.

Waxed canvas, natural leather, and raw brass are materials that develop character with use. Expect the canvas to crease and burnish, the leather to deepen in color, and the brass to develop a rich golden patina over time.

A Note About Latigo Leather

The Slate / Burgundy No.503 uses latigo leather for the handles and shoulder strap. Latigo is richly dyed and conditioned, and exposure to water or heavy moisture may cause some color transfer. Avoid wearing or resting wet latigo leather against light-colored clothing or skin until the leather has completely dried.
