Apron Restoration: Where Utility Meets Art
I have always had a heightened level of attachment to my stuff. As a child, when I got a new pair of shoes I would wear them to bed. When I purchase something, a lasting relationship is born. If it breaks, I repair it. When it gets a hole, I mend it. If it patinas, I let it patina because I love a well-used object as much, or even more than a brand new one.
ARTIFACT apron restoration is inspired by military “rigger repairs” used on vintage parachutes, field uniforms, and field gear. Although expedient by design, these unique repairs have always caught my eye as having a frenetic, artful quality. They are a wonderful intersection where utility meets art.
Fun fact, rigger repairs are a big part of why I started ARTIFACT in 2010. I’ve collected a lot of things in my life, including vintage military uniforms and field gear. I was curious about the sewing equipment used to make and service vintage canvas field gear, which led me deep into learning about industrial sewing machines and eventually sewn product manufacturing. I purchased my first Consew 206 walking foot sewing machine on Craigslist and the rest is history!
