I love collecting vintage textiles, including bandanas. Vintage bandanas have a special look and feel that is lacking in modern poly-blend, silkscreened examples.

It was fun to design a bandana. I knew I wanted it to double as a chess / checker gameboard but treaded lightly so it didn't scream "checkboard" when worn. I incorporated design elements from several vintage bananas from my personal collection, and was very happy with how the hand-dyed color turned out. 

The printing process we used is called discharge printing, where a paste with discharge additive is printed onto the design to remove pigment from the printed areas. Later, when the bandanas are rinsed, the paste disolves and the design is then part of the fabric. 

I have gorgeous 19th century "turkey red" cowboy bandanas and even 1940's Elephant Brand workwear bandanas that used this printing technique and strongly felt this process was worth pursuing to get a lasting product that will look even better with use.
